What we collect, and what we do with it.

The Hood Shepherd is a small nonprofit ministry. We collect only what we need to send you a field guide, run the workshop, and thank the people who give. We never sell or rent your information to anyone.

The short version

  • We never sell or rent your information.
  • We use it to send what you asked for, and a few short emails about it.
  • You can unsubscribe from any email, and you can ask us to delete what we have.
  • A few services help us run the site. Each one gets only what it needs to do its job.

When you look up your street

When you type an address to find your neighborhood type, we send it to the U.S. Census Bureau's address service, and sometimes to Mapbox, to find the block it sits on. Mapbox also suggests addresses as you type.

We don't save your street address when you look it up. If you go on to open a guide, we keep the block group, a Census area of a few hundred homes, so we know which guide to send.

When you open a field guide

To open a guide, you give us your first name, email, and ZIP code (or postal code in Canada). We save those with the guide you opened, the block group if you looked up an address, the page that sent you, and the kind of browser you used.

We email you a private link to your guide, then seven short field notes over the next two weeks. Every one of those emails has an unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing never takes the guide away.

If you open a guide through a church's website, that church sees your name, email, town, and neighborhood type. It does not see your street address. In that case we email you the guide and nothing else.

When you register for the workshop

We ask for your name, email, phone, church, and home address. We use your address to choose your street's field guide and to seat you with people who live on your kind of street. We use your phone only to reach you about the workshop.

Stripe handles payment. We never see or store your card number.

When you give

Gifts go through Church Center, which is run by Planning Center. They handle your payment details under their own privacy policy.

We receive your name, email, and the gifts you give so we can thank you and send your year-end giving summary. We keep donor names and emails in Mailchimp to send those notes.

When your church buys the neighborhood reader

We keep your church's name, the email of the person who bought it, and where to send a note when someone uses it. Stripe handles the subscription and payment.

When you use the teen guide matcher

On the teens page you can describe a teen to find the right guide. We save what you type and which guide it matched, so we can make the matcher better.

Please don't type a teen's name or anything else that would identify them.

When you use the GospelGraph survey

We save your answers and the area you chose on the map, so we can build your report.

Visit counts and cookies

We use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages help people. It sets cookies in your browser. Before Google sees a page address, we remove private links and personal details from it.

You can block these cookies in your browser or with Google's opt-out add-on, and the site works fine without them. We don't use advertising cookies, and we don't follow you around other sites.

Our host, Vercel, keeps short-term server logs, including IP addresses, to keep the site running and safe.

Who helps us

  • Vercel hosts the site
  • Supabase stores our database
  • Postmark sends our emails
  • Mailchimp sends notes to donors
  • Stripe takes workshop and reader payments
  • Planning Center runs Church Center giving
  • U.S. Census Bureau and Mapbox match addresses to a block
  • Google Analytics counts visits
  • Clerk signs in our own staff, not visitors

We share your information with anyone else only if the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety.

How long we keep it

We keep your information while we still use it for what you signed up for. If you ask, we delete it, unless the law says we have to keep it. Gift records for tax receipts are the main example.

Your choices

Every email we send has an unsubscribe link. To see what we have about you, fix it, or have it deleted, write to aaron@thehoodshepherd.com. We'll answer as soon as we can, and within 30 days.

Children

This site is for adults. The teen guides are written for parents, coaches, and youth leaders, not for teens to use. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you think a child has given us information, write to us and we'll delete it.

Changes and questions

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change matters, we'll say so on the site.
